The setup assistant: step by step to your first chatbot

An overview of the 9 steps of the setup assistant at "/onboarding".

Last verified: 2026-07-20

The setup assistant guides you through the basic setup of your tenant. You can find it via the "Setup assistant" sidebar entry in the main menu. Each step can be marked done individually; a progress bar shows your status in percent.

Step by step

  1. 1. Company dataEnter your company name, branding and contact details under "Settings".
  2. 2. Build a knowledge baseCreate initial knowledge entries or documents in the "Knowledge" section so the chatbot can answer questions.
  3. 3. Start a website crawlIn the "Knowledge" section, start a crawl of your website to automatically import existing content as a knowledge base.
  4. 4. Activate channelsUnder "Communication", activate the desired channels: web chat, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or email.
  5. 5. Customize widget designIn the "Chatbot" section, adjust colors, logo and greeting text of the web chat widget.
  6. 6. Set handover rulesIn the "Chatbot" section, define the confidence threshold below which a conversation is handed over to a human agent.
  7. 7. Run a test dialogHave a test conversation with your chatbot right inside the assistant — this test channel is separate from your real statistics, so test messages never distort reports.
  8. 8. Approve a domainThe domain(s) on which your widget may load are set by Zentor when the widget is created — not by you under "Settings" (see the "Embed the chat widget" article). Use this step to check whether the desired domain(s) have already been communicated to Zentor.
  9. 9. InstallationIn the "Chatbot" section, retrieve the embed code for your website (see the widget embedding article).

Expected result

All 9 steps are marked done and the progress bar shows 100%. Your tenant has a knowledge base, activated channels and a configured widget.

Common error cases

The test dialog in step 7 reports "No active chatbot profile".

Cause: No chatbot profile has been created for your tenant yet.

Resolution: First create a default chatbot profile (see "Create a chatbot profile") and retry the step afterwards.

Nothing happens after the last step, there is no completion screen.

Cause: This is expected behavior — the assistant does not close automatically and remains permanently reachable via the sidebar in case you want to revisit something later.

Resolution: No action needed. You can reopen the assistant at any time to repeat individual steps.

Progress of a step is lost.

Cause: Status is saved server-side; a failed save can be caused by an unstable connection.

Resolution: Mark the step as done again; if the error persists, check the system status on the dashboard.
